Detail image of Collected Forms, Lauren Shapiro. Commission for MSC Cruise Terminals, Miami Beach, Florida (2025).
Congratulations to Lauren Shapiro on her largest public artwork to date! Collected Forms is a permanent, site-specific ceramic installation for the MSC Cruise Terminal in PortMiami.
Lauren says, "Collected Forms is made up of two monumental friezes that explore the interconnectedness of marine ecosystems, with a focus on coral reefs. Having lived my whole life in South Florida, I’ve seen how vital, vulnerable, and endlessly complex these ecosystems are. The work draws from my archive of 3D-scanned marine life, arranged in a Penrose pattern and mounted on wood panels routed with sacred geometry. A gradient of satin white to ocean blues, grays, and greens reflects the shifting conditions of coral environments. The piece was created through mold-making, slip casting, and layered spray glazing. For me, Collected Forms is both a tribute to the fragile balance of our oceans and an invitation to reflect on how we care for them. It also connects with the MSC Foundation’s mission to inspire appreciation and preservation of underwater ecosystems."
Clara Toro will be opening a solo exhibition, Everyday Joy, beginning October 20, 2025 at MDC Hialeah Campus. The exhibition is open, by appointment, Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Congratulations to Juana Valdes on her largest public artwork to date! As Above, So Below: Wayfinding and Wondering, on view at MSC Miami Cruise Terminal AA/AAA.
Juana Valdés’s, monumental terrazzo floor fuses the history of cartography with the ingenuity of celestial wayfinding. Inspired by early migration, cartography, and maritime travel, Valdés drew inspiration from antique maps at the Hispanic Society of America, navigational diagrams, and iconography in books at the Kinney Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to remind us how travel has shaped our world. The cobalt blue terrazzo that spans the concourse, representing the ocean and night sky, encases the interconnectedness of the human experience as it maps lived experience on Earth to the Heavens. Valdés illustrates the evolution of navigation from the Age of Discovery to the advent of GPS today, using 274 vibrant terrazzo elements with custom inlays of aluminum, brass, marble, and lapis.
