Artist Highlight: Thomas Bils
Meet Bakehouse artist Thomas Bils, a painter who incorporates bizarre scenes and humorous subject matter in referencing and reflecting on his experiences navigating life in contemporary America. Growing up in Melbourne, Florida, Thomas draws on the aesthetic absurdities of the opioid-stricken suburban South. His work intertwines autobiographical story-telling with universal anxieties, acting as the “unreliable narrator” and engaging in an ongoing investigation into the mutability of truth and narrative.
Donor Highlight: Carol Damian
Meet Carol Damian, Ph.D., Professor of Art History, curator and highly respected scholar in Latin American and Caribbean Art. Dr. Damian's most recent work has been with Latin American Women and Cuban exile artists. She is the Curator of the Kislak Collection at the MDC Freedom Tower and the Curator of the Chapel of La Merced at Corpus Christi Church in Miami. She was also recently elected Chairperson of the Miami Dade County Art in Public Places Trust.

"Level Up" Workshop Series: Exploring Esolangs With Daniel Temkin
Bakehouse is thrilled to announce the "Level Up" Workshop series, a program created with support from our Knight Foundation Grant to plan for our development towards physically and programmatically serving art making in the digital age. The goal of the series is to connect Bakehouse and its artist community with digital artists and technologists to inform our plans and elevate our collective learning. On September 9, eleven Bakehouse artists had a chance to collaborate with Daniel Temkin, a multifaceted artist specializing in esoteric programming languages (esolangs).

Donor Highlight: Wilfred and Robin Vasquez
Meet Wilfred and Robin Vasquez, active Wynwood Norte community members for over 50 years. They have consistently supported Bakehouse Art Complex and are founding members, along with Bakehouse, of the Wynwood Community Enhancement Association (WCEA). When they’re not advocating for the Wynwood community, joyous pursuits include traveling, reading, art, exploring the outdoors, vintage vehicles, and spending quality time with their two sons, daughter-in-law, and grandson.
Artist Highlight: Susan Kim Alvarez
Meet Summer Open alumnus Susan Kim Alvarez, a multimedia artist whose practice explores the fantastical chaos of her innermost world. Drawing from the folk stories of her Cuban and Vietnamese heritage, Susan’s artwork integrates the characters and mythological motifs introduced to her through traditional storytelling and experiences of cultural celebration. Through painting and mixed media sculpture, Susan is able to create new mythologies and imaginaries, particular to the joys and discomforts inherent in her own experiences of tradition.
Meet New Bakehouse Board Member Zach Hyman…
Born and raised in Chicago, Zach Hyman is a digital program manager and creative strategist who has spent his career focused on the intersection of design and data. Zach just completed his second MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, under the school's Distinguished Fellowship Program and assumed the position of DTC Product Insights & Operations Manager at Levi Strauss & Co.

Meet Bernard Zyscovich & Suria Yaffar, a dynamic team who, as partners in both life and work, have seamlessly blended creativity, innovation, and generosity. Bernard and Suria have generously contributed to Bakehouse, both financially and in providing in-kind architectural and design services to help Bakehouse explore the addition of affordable housing to our site.
Artist Highlight: Carmen Smith
Meet Carmen Smith, a painter at Bakehouse whose practice explores how the built environment affects emotional and psychological states. Smith draws on memory and the tropical urban architecture unique to South Florida, in creating work that is rich in its ability to elicit emotional responses grounded in memorial and spacial familiarity.

In Memoriam: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Helene Pancoast
In the early 1980’s, Helene Pancoast was amongst a small group of local artists who embarked on acquiring an affordable art space in Wynwood Norte, now known and beloved as Bakehouse Art Complex. Last week, we received the news of Helene's peaceful passing. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Pancoast family and friends for their loss.

Meet Adriene McCoy, Bakehouse Board Member since 2019, and Senior Vice President and Chief People Officer (CPO) for Baptist Health South Florida. Adriene’s wealth of experience in both for-profit and non-profit healthcare environments has lent itself exceedingly well in supporting the Bakehouse community, especially as Baptist Health seeks to connect arts & culture to health & wellness through artist-led programs.
Artist Highlight: Avi Young
Meet Avi Jannus Young, Miami native and Queer artist working in drawing, fiber, collage, photography, ceramic, and painting. Young uses multi-disciplinary techniques in documenting the jubilation of the queer experience, present the sublime nature found in the range of intimacy, and inform viewers through representation imagery, in the hopes that it will evoke a sense of empathetic relatability.
Artist Highlight: Philip Lique
Meet Philip Lique, multidisciplinary artist at Bakehouse since 2020. Philip’s practice focuses on Western civilization, religion, occult practices, and art history- themes that often become source material for sculpture, installation, printmaking, and independent publications. Lique is a self-described “obsessive maker,” integrating creation and daily routine in producing work that reflect the intersection of otherwise distinct interests.

Meet Lawrence “Larry” Kline, VP of the Bakehouse Art Complex Board of Directors, where he has served for nearly a decade now! As Managing Director of the Perkins&Will Miami studio, Larry has worked to create designs that enhance and exist in harmony with Miami’s natural environment, showcasing clean, strong architectural forms that harness the strength of our tropical landscape and abundance of natural light. With his commitment of time and resources to our organization, Bakehouse has experienced tremendous growth. Now, we are fortunate to draw on his talent and expertise in thinking about our future live-work campus.

Bakehouse Art Complex Awarded $100K From National Endowment For The Arts
Bakehouse Art Complex is proud to announce it is one of 57 projects selected nationally from among 157 eligible applicants to receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town grant program. Bakehouse will receive $100,000 to support architecture and design services related to the redesign of the Bakehouse Art Complex in the Wynwood Norte neighborhood of Miami.
