What’s Baking? A New Kiln Coming Soon to Bakehouse

Bakehouse is thrilled to announce that, thanks to the generosity of Mathew Whitman Lazenby and facilitated by Nik Massey, Whitman Family Development has made a very generous donation enabling Bakehouse to purchase a much-needed new, large professional-grade kiln for our growing community of ceramic artists.

This donation advances Bakehouse's mission to provide artists with the infrastructure needed for sustained artistic production, experimentation, skill-building, and economic opportunity.

The new kiln is a large-capacity, front-loading commercial kiln. It strengthens our role as a shared production platform, reducing bottlenecks, improving safety and accessibility, and allowing more artists to work at a professional scale. By investing in our ceramics facilities, we are reinforcing individual practices and the collective creative ecosystem that defines Bakehouse and the community it serves.

“We are deeply grateful to Mathew for recognizing the importance of investing in the spaces that support Miami’s cultural producers,” commented Cathy Leff. “Mathew is third generation of Whitman Family Development, best known for Bal Harbour Shops, one of the world’s most influential luxury retail destinations. Building on his multigenerational legacy, founded by his grandfather Stanley Whitman, Mathew is guiding the firm’s evolution through thoughtful expansion that consistently integrates architectural excellence, lush subtropical landscaping, and a deep commitment to art, culture, and community alongside global retail.”

We invite other ceramic enthusiasts to donate here to help us continue to upgrade our artist-serving fabrication spaces.
