bac:23

December 3rd — December 6th 10-6pm
The BAC's 33,000 square foot facility will transform itself into bac:23 from December 3-6 2009 to coincide with Art Basel and it's various satellite fairs. The name bac:23 is derived from the number of years the Bakehouse Art Complex has had it roots in the Wynwood Arts District and has been serving the community as the premiere institution for the visual arts in Miami. Now in its 23rd year, the BAC is at capacity with Miami's hottest artists.

bac:23 features the artwork and studios of over 70 local Miami artists. Guests are encouraged to visit the studios & speak with the resident artists. All artwork in the studios are for sale directly
from the artists themselves. This is the only fair in town that guests can get a first-hand look at
the artistic process while finding out the story behind a particular piece.

Exhibition Dates: November 28- December 17

In its 2,600 square foot Main Gallery, BAC artists confront the idea of the overwhelming sensory qualities of Art Basel inSensory Overload. Blurring the Line

Blurring the Line

October 9th—October 26th
Ambient Guitar Music — by Peter Betan
Opening Reception Friday, October 9th 7-10pm
Where: Bakehouse Art Complex Main Gallery, 561 NW 32nd Street, Miami FL 33127
The Main Gallery at the BAC is pleased to announce the opening of the group exhibition: "Blurring The Line", featuring the works of several BAC artists whose work explores the line in terms of ambiguity. The line is a vital component to the visual world. In some cases, the line's role is to separate something from something else, thus defining what is and what is not. In other cases, a line is manipulated into an object itself; as a number or a letter. By rejecting the overt meanings lines are intended to define, the artists are able to explore shifting subjects like environment, development and creation.

Cosmos: Une Petite Rétrospective
Edouard Duval-Carrié

December 8, 2007- January 4, 2008
Curator: José Perez and Alicia M. Scalera

Edouard Duval-Carrie has a passionate love affair with his country Haiti, although he is also critical. His work in “Uprooted” is an implicit critique of Haitian history as though it were suspended in mythic timelessness and entrenched in stereotypes. The artist deconstructs notions and realities of retrograde provincialism and romantic bourgeois traditions. His paintings combine African fables, classic mythology, Haitian and world history with contemporary events. Haiti is a pan-African state. The slaves came with sets of beliefs that combined into a religion loosely called voodoo. Voodoo has been the soul of Haiti, the essence that permits Haitian to emancipate themselves and is today as valid for the majority of Haitians, as it was 200 years ago. Voodoo has gone underground; it is a religion on the margin. The artist’s work forces the viewer to consider this fact of life in Haiti and also asks why Haiti has been forgotten by the great powers of the world. In “Uprooted” the artist gives the Voodoo world and its deities back to the Haitian people and maybe to each of us. Courtesy of Bernice Steinbaum Gallery. View invitation »
