Maria Theresa Barbist
Maria Theresa Barbist (Austrian, born 1979) received her MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2014. She performed at the Miami Performance International Festival, the Northern California Performance Platform as well as in various galleries in the San Francisco Bay Area and Miami. Her film and video work was shown at the Berkeley Art Museum and the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale.
Through sculpture, performance and video Maria Theresa Barbist playfully investigates emotional layers of childhood memories and dreams. Exploring themes of sexuality, trauma and fantasies of escape, she reshapes canvases - cutting and binding them into three-dimensional objects. In her performances Barbist translates the objects back into movement reversing the power dynamics of creator and creation. The objects take on the role of the maker while the dance/body captured through video represents the artwork. Through this process-oriented practice Barbist intends to break up rigid perceptions to create new perspectives and alternative views.
"My artwork serves my life, informs it, changes it and makes me understand what is difficult to see: parts of myself that are vulnerable, memories and emotions within hidden, unconscious space."
