Age group: 13 – 16
This one-of-a-kind afterschool program is designed to introduce students to the different editorial cartooning techniques and languages. On the cusp of the US Presidential Election, students will learn about Americaʼs political culture, with an emphasis on the most commonly used symbols that identify our political parties. They will be inspired by a unique tour through the solo exhibition of Jim tMorin, the Miami Heraldʼs Editorial Cartoonist and 1996 Pulitzer Prize winner. A visit to Edwin Villasmilʼs studio and an art history slide show with a brainstorming session on a chosen current political event/character will inform
several editorial cartoon assignments. At the end of the workshop students will be able to install their artworks on The Classroomʼs walls and enjoy the cool experience of “showing at the Bakehouse” over refreshments.
